Volunteering with the White Seabass Restoration Project

Become a Volunteer

Volunteering as a White Seabass Feeder is a great way to help restore our oceans' fish abundance and be outdoors on the bay! Volunteers feed the fish, maintain the fish pens, and record important information to track the fishes' health and feeding habits. It's a great program for families, students, and anyone wanting to "make a difference."

  • The program is designed to be flexible - you can volunteer according to your own schedule.
  • Volunteering is done independently, which helps to build self-confidence.
  • Volunteers can participate in the fish release, where we scoop, count and release the white seabass directly into the bay.
  • SDOF hosts quarterly white seabass meetings to update volunteers on the program (and also serves as a continuing education platform for those who want to learn more)!

Choosing a Grow-out Facility

SDOF has two white seabass grow-out facilities - a small facility Mission Bay near SeaWorld, and another larger facility in San Diego Bay at the corner of Hawthorn and Harbor Drive. Both facilities need volunteers and offer an excellent experience. The Mission Bay facility is recommended for families with small children, special needs volunteers, or persons not comfortable on unstable ground - as it is smaller and safer. Groups of 3 or more should choose the San Diego Bay facility - as there is more work to be done. No matter where you volunteer, you are contributing to the restocking effort!

Training

To become a volunteer, please complete the online Volunteer Application. Once your application has been processed, you will be contacted to arrange an orientation. The orientation will take about an hour, and you will learn (and practice) everything you need to know about volunteering for the White Seabass Restocking Project. Please check out our Calendar of Events for upcoming orientations!

Please read the handbook to learn more about the program and don't forget to bring the White Seabass Volunteer Waiver to your orientation.
