This program gives us the opportunity to educate and inspire San Diego youth to become passionate stewards of local ocean ecosystems.
While at Mission Point, OIM students are introduced to local marine organisms, taught the basics of snorkeling and fitted for gear. Once everybody's ready to go, the kids are taught to snorkel in shallow water, near the protected beach where they can observe fish, invertebrates and algae. After snorkeling, children, volunteers and staff use core sampling at the beach to show some of the interesting animals that live just below our sandals. We wrap up the day with a review and notes on conservation.
We keep our student to staff ratio very low (no more than 3:1 for snorkeling). This allows for more personal-based instruction and added safety in the water.
Program Cost: $25 (includes use of snorkel gear, instruction, workbook and a snack)
* Students should bring a lunch, a towel, wear sunscreen and a bathing suit!
Everyone wears a thick (usually 7mm) wetsuit, which provides a maximum amount of warmth as well as buoyancy.
