Sustainable Seafood Choices
What words come to mind when you think of seafood? You may think 'yumm!'... most people do! Unfortunately, the number of people in the world is
dramatically rising, while fish stocks continue to decline! Sustainable Seafood Choices, is aimed toward spreading awareness of the issues facing the
oceans as a direct result of fishing practices and pressures. With a knowledge of what problems exist, consumers will be able to make choices that
support healthy oceans whether dining out or at home! By choosing types of fish that have healthy populations, as well as those whose fishing or farming methods do not result in pollution, habitat destruction,
or the waste of untargeted sealife you will ensure the preservation of our ocean environments!
How can you take action?
First, print out the Sustainable Seafood Choices brochure to learn about fishing methods and check out the sustainability status of your
favorite seafood. Next time you order seafood from a restaurant or market, ask where it comes from and if it is a sustainable fishery.

Quick Facts
* For every 1 pound of shrimp on your dinner plate, 3-15 pounds of other sealife is discarded as bycatch, making this one of the worst offending bycatch fisheries.
* Orange Roughy reach reproductive maturity after 20 years, and can live to be over 100 years old! This makes it very difficult for the population to recover from
a single fishing event.
* Currently, about one third of the world's fish harvest is used to make fishmeal and fish oil!
