In 1995 Congress
mandated the disposal of 400 ships that have been in
storage for decades, some since World War II. The U.S.
Navy recently adopted a report from the Rand Corporation
citing that "reefing" these ships instead of
scrapping them is the most ecologically responsible and
economically feasible thing to do. The sinking of the
HMCS Yukon in San Diego demonstrated this could be done
while meeting all the environmental and permitting
requirements. Reefing these ships will save the taxpayers
$1.5 billion dollars while creating jobs for many
Americans.
Contact your
congressperson and senator to voice your support for
turning these ships into artificial reefs.
