The Yukon Project

Numerous holes had been cut low in the hull to permit an easy controlled sinking. Plywood covering the holes did not protect against water entering and too much water entered the ship.

The ship was towed out to its correct sinking site on Thursday (July, 13th) and the explosive charges were being installed on the inside hull below the water level to facilitate a controlled sinking on Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

The explosive charges are being removed this morning (Friday, July 14th) and the safety inspection teams will begin clearing the ship for divers.

No person, mammal or fish were injured and the ship is intact. She sank quietly, gently and with grace. The Yukon did not lay down upright as planned and is laying flat on her port side.

The "First to Dive" program may be delayed. If you are registered for this program please contact your dive boat operator.

The Hasbro "Battleship Tournament" will continue as planned.

The boat will be open On Sunday (July 16th) at 1 p.m. to the public for diving.

We do not know if the ship will be righted or if the remaining holes will be cut. As we sort things out we will post the details to this web site.

One of the hardest working volunteers on the project, Milt Beard was largely responsible for cutting the holes in the ship and we've all teased him that if the ship didn't lay down upright it would be known as "Milt's tilt". Well Milt, this tilt's for you!
