A sinking
ship isn't
always bad.

If you see a disabled naval ship being towed into S.D. Bay next week, don't worry. It's not a war casualty. It's not even a U.S. ship. But it definitely has engine problems. In fact, it's been stripped of all vital equipment.
The Yukon, a Canadian destroyer escort, is being brought by the San Diego Oceans Foundation to create an artificial reef 1.8 miles off Mission Beach. The plan is to berth the Yukon along the Embarcadero until Nov. 11 - our Veterans Day and Canada's Rememberance Day -- then sink it with great fanfare of M.B., possibly captured live on Fox Entertainment. Supervising the destruction will be a team of Canadian explosives experts. That should be a relief to Kim Campbell, former Canadian prime minister, who recently said she couldn't bear to let Americans sink a ship of the Canadian Navy.
P.S. -- A word of advice for divers who would like to visit the wreck: "Smile, you're on candid camera." The Yukon will be outfitted with remote-controlled cameras feeding photos to a Web site.
