Storm Drain Stenciling

Storm drains were designed to be the fastest and most efficient way of getting rainwater off streets and parking lots. Unfortunately, the water that flows into storm drains carries trash and sediment, fertilizers, household cleaners, gasoline and motor oil. All of these pollutants are dumped directly into San Diego's rivers, bays and ocean - untreated! This means that bacteria, hazardous wastes, and other pollutants enter our natural waterways.

In partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego, SDOF volunteers stencil messages next to storm drains to help raise awareness about the link between the storm drain systems and water quality.

Need a project for your club, neighborhood group, or classroom? Storm drain stenciling may be the project for you. Every year volunteers from schools, scout groups, community organizations, and churches help to stencil storm drains. Many areas of the County have not been stenciled or need to be re-stenciled. You can choose an area to stencil - or perhaps your own neighborhood needs stenciling.

Paint, stencils, and safety equipment are provided at no charge. Please fill out a Volunteer Application to sign up for your 15-minute orientation today!
