XSDOF Needs Your Help

We need your support now, more than ever! Non-profits around the world have experienced a 75% drop in donations. SDOF relies on the support from the community to continue our programs. A government grant we normally receive has been cut due to the budget crisis. We know times are difficult for everyone, but please consider making a tax-deductible contribution today by clicking here and becoming a member.

Also, if your company would be interested in sponsoring one of our programs or events, please email us at info@sdoceans.org.

Josh Antus - Volunteer of the Month

We would like to take a moment to thank Josh Antus, an incredibly supportive member of the San Diego Oceans Foundation.

Josh started volunteering for SDOF’s programs in 2008 and has been amazingly devoted ever since. Going above and beyond the average duties of a volunteer, Josh makes himself available to feed white seabass, participate in special events and lend a hand in our fundraisers. Thank you Josh, for all that you do!

As a token of our appreciation for all of his hard work and dedication, SDOF would like to present Josh Antus with two single day passes to SeaWorld San Diego, where he can continue to enjoy all that our oceans have to offer.

It's volunteers, like Josh, that allow us to continue spreading our mission of ocean stewardship!

11,500 New Baby White Seabass

We finally got the 'go-ahead' from Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, and (if all goes well) will be welcoming our next batch of fingerlings in just a few days!

San Diego Bay
Wednesday, May 18th
11:00AM and 3:00PM

This group is ready to graduate from their nursery in Carlsbad and move on to bigger and better things… San Diego Bay!

At the welcoming party, you'll be able to:
- Start your morning by helping unload about 11,500 fingerlings and transporting them into their new home. We need as much help as we can get, as we'll be unloading them bucket by bucket from the truck. Morning and afternoon shifts available, so if you're free for either time, please let me know!

- Meet other WSB volunteers and sign up for feeding times (we will be filling AM, Mid and PM shifts daily).

Please contact us for more information or to RSVP for this monumental event in the lives of our baby fish at volunteer@sdoceans.org

White Seabass Restoration Project: Pen Cleaning

Are you a certified diver who wants to try something new and doesn’t mind getting a bit dirty? We’re always looking for dedicated volunteers who’ll help clean our white seabass pens!

San Diego Bay
Sunday, May 22
9AM - 12PM

Since our White Seabass Restoration Project facilities consist of mesh containment nets that hang in the water for months at a time, they often become COVERED with a variety of marine life. These organisms have found the perfect place to settle and take up residency! Problem is...they block out the very vital water circulation that provides oxygen for our fish. In order to keep our juvenile white seabass strong, healthy and ready for release into the wild, we need to perform regular maintenance on their containment nets.

To dive for a cause and maybe even have some fun doing it, contact volunteer@sdoceans.org and RSVP today! * Must have logged at least 20 dives in order to participate. Proof of certification is required.

White Seabass Restoration Project: Volunteer Orientation

Come out, enjoy the sun and learn all there is to know about replenishing a depleted fish population with SDOF’s White Seabass Restoration Project.

San Diego Bay
Sunday, May 22
10:00AM

After this short orientation, you’ll be able to volunteer as a ‘White Seabass Mentor’ and really contribute to the betterment of our oceans! Spending time out on the bay is never as rewarding as when you’re SEEING the difference you make! Contact volunteer@sdoceans.org to get involved. RSVP is required to attend!

Ocean In Motion: Summer Snorkeling Volunteer Orientation

Are you a strong swimmer/experienced snorkeler who’s looking to inspire local youth with regards to marine science and conservation? If so, the 2011 snorkeling season is back and ready for you!

Marina Village Conference Center
Wednesday, May 25th
6:30 PM - 8 PM

Join us for an evening filled with fun, food and facts. During the orientation, you’ll learn all about the Ocean In Motion program, volunteerresponsibilities and safety procedures. You’ll also have an opportunity to meet SDOF staff, get to know other volunteers, pick up a schedule and ask all the questions you'd like.

Fun, safety, conservation and the identification of local marine organisms are what these trips are all about…and we want you to feel prepared. Contact volunteer@sdoceans.org to start motivating the children of your community!

Simple Ways To Support SDOF

Become an SDOF Member

SDOF relies on the generosity of the community to help support our programs. Become an SDOF member and help promote ocean stewardship!

Check with your Employer for a Matching Contributions Program

When you donate to SDOF, let your company know! They may have an Employee Matching program that could double your donation and maximize your impact.

Adopt a White Seabass

2SDOF recently launched our 'Adopt a White Seabass' program! One of the most popular volunteer opportunities with SDOF is our White Seabass Restoration Project. Annually, volunteers help raise and release thousands of fish that live in our pens. Now is your chance to adopt one of these special little critters.

For only $25 (includes a Seahare membership), you can adopt a white seabass, name it, and help ensure it succeed in the wild! Now you can adopt fish and give them to your friends and family - and help raise awareness about our program.

Specimens for our Ocean In Motion Marine Science Education Program

As we kick off our school program again this year, we’ll be looking for even more ways to get local students excited about marine science! If you happen to have any sort of specimens (e.g. shark skin & egg casings, crustacean molts, preserved fish/invertebrates, baleen, bones), we’d love to incorporate them into our program.

Easy, Eco-Friendly Efforts
Spring Cleaning: Get your home in order without using harmful chemicals!

The average American home has 63 synthetic chemical cleaning products in its cupboards (translating to roughly 10 gallons of chemicals)! These chemicals can be detrimental to your health as well as the environment. This month, try it the natural way! Just go to the store and look for products that are non-toxic, biodegradable and made from renewable resources. Brands like Seventh Generation, Clorox Green Works and Simple Green are great choices! For an even greener (and more budget-friendly) choice, make your own cleaning kit with stuff you already have at home. Vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of your favorite scented oils work just as well as the hard stuff. Plus, by using reusable spray bottles, you’ll prevent all the packaging from store-bought products from entering our landfills.

Clean green with these easy-to-follow steps:
All-purpose cleaner:
Mix a little warm water with either vinegar or baking soda.
Window cleaner:
Fill a spray bottle with water and either ¼ cup white vinegar or 1-tbsp of lemon juice.
Carpet odors:
Sprinkle a little baking soda and vacuum it up.
Oven grease:
Cover the bottom of the oven with water and baking soda and let set overnight.
Mold removal:
Combine 2 tsp of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water. Shake and spray on problem areas.

When replacing the products you already have, don’t just throw them in the trash, as they may end up contaminating our water supply. Instead, take them direclty to your local dump, like the Miramar Landfill.
