XOn to New Adventures…

Dear Wonderful SDOF Supporters,

After two fun-filled years, I will be moving on from my work at the San Diego Oceans Foundation. The time I’ve spent with SDOF has provided me with an incredible amount of experience that I feel I couldn’t have gained anywhere else. I have learned so very much from the wide variety of people and programs that make up this great organization! Although I have thoroughly enjoyed fighting for healthy oceans through education, outreach and activity with all of you, it is time for me to continue down my own personal path of ocean stewardship. As many of you may already know, I have been accepted into the Fisheries and Conservation Biology Master’s program at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories . Here, I will be helping to conduct the research necessary for effective management of our marine resources (while passing along as much conservation information as possible to the Monterey/Santa Cruz communities, of course). As I say goodbye, I would like to thank you for your unrelenting support and hope that you will embrace the new SDOF staff as you have me. This organization has a bright future and I am glad to have been a part of its past!

Thanks again for everything and please, keep up the good work!

Cheryl Barnes, Former Program & Outreach Director (SDOF)

XCrystal Bessette: SDOF's new Program Manager

Hi SDOF Members and Volunteers,

I am so excited to be joining the San Diego Oceans Foundation staff! I’ve volunteered for several of SDOF’s programs in the past and have always been very pleased with the organization’s efforts, not only in maintaining healthy oceans, but also in spreading the idea of ocean stewardship to the community. I was just a child, living in Monterey, when I discovered my passion for the ocean. My interest in the marine environment, which was centered around sharks, continued to grow as I did. When it came time to make decisions about college, I chose to attend San Diego State University and eventually earned my degree in marine biology. Through school and my experiences in the community, my love for the ocean and desire to protect it continued to develop, and although I had planned to leave San Diego once my undergraduate work was complete, I realized that I had actually found a new home that I loved in southern California.

While at SDOF, I look forward to providing people with a variety of ways that they can give back to the oceans they know and love. The knowledge that you really can make a difference is an important part of being a member of any community. I’ve seen the wonders it has done in my own family! I am thrilled to have the opportunity to participate in hands-on projects and hope to bring new ideas that will further enhance the already-flourishing programs created by my predecessor. I am very eager to work with all of the wonderful volunteers who have made ocean stewardship and conservation a priority in their lives, as I have in mine…so please, come out to an event and say ‘hi’!

Looking forward to working with you to preserve our local marine resources!

Crystal Bessette

Marianne MacGuidwin - SDOF's new Marketing & Outreach Manager

Hello! My name is Marianne MacGuidwin, and I am joining SDOF’s team as the Marketing and Outreach Manager. Growing up in Madison, Wisconsin, I am more accustomed to ice skating on frozen lakes than the swimming in the Pacific Ocean. However, after moving to San Diego in early 2010, I began interning at the San Diego Oceans Foundation and quickly fell in love with the ocean and working within the environmental sector.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in International Economics, I worked in sports hospitality, specializing in event organization and marketing for the Masters and US Open golf tournaments. I am excited to work within the marketing and outreach departments of SDOF, and look forward to working with the amazing volunteers that make SDOF’s programs possible and planning some great fundraising events.

When I’m not updating SDOF’s facebook page or naming the fish in the office fish tank, I enjoy running, cooking, and exploring San Diego.

I look forward to meeting all of you at an upcoming event!

Marianne MacGuidwin

SDOF Programs

Intern Interludes: Alex Feck

We would like to take a moment to pay tribute to Alex Feck, a former SDOF Intern, for her extraordinary and continued support! Alex interned with SDOF in 2009 and played an instrumental role in developing the classroom portion of our Ocean In Motion: Marine Science Education Program . Her dedication to science and education are admirable and we want to thank her for all of her hard work!

“In 2008, I returned to San Diego after completing an internship in the Seychelles, Africa and wanted to continue working closely in the field of marine science. A quick internet search led me to an internship opportunity with SDOF’s Ocean in Motion: Marine Science Education Program. As I began my term (before classroom sessions began), I spent countless hours compiling species information, revising previous programs and creating new activities and homework assignments. As classes started, so did the eye-opening experiences! The children were so excited to have us in their classes and they soaked up all of the information we had to share, just like the sponges we were discussing. Once the school year came to an end (after all of the live animal labs, lectures and activities), I realized that I wanted to become a marine biology teacher myself. As of now, I am off to pursue a Master’s degree at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, but plan on pursuing my dream of becoming a teacher in the future. My internship with SDOF was truly unforgettable, and what I gained from it is priceless. I owe SDOF so much for all that they have helped me to accomplish and achieve thus far. Thank you so much!” – Alex Feck

As a token of our appreciation for all of her commitment to SDOF, we would like to present Alex with two tickets to the Chula Vista Nature Center, where she can continue to enjoy the ocean and all of its inhabitants!

White Seabass Restoration Project

Last month, Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute delivered 28,142 juvenile white seabass to our San Diego Bay growout facility. Seemingly happy and healthy in their new homes, these fish greatly benefitted from the numerous volunteers who came out to help with the new ‘bucket brigade’ method of transport. Thank you to those of you who took part in these monumental events!

Over the next few months, SDOF’s ‘White Seabass Caretakers’ will help feed and nurture these fish so that they grow nice and big before release (increasing their chances of maturing, reproducing and replenishing their local populations in the wild). For more information about this innovative combination of research and conservation, please click here .

Volunteer Opportunities

For more information about the programs below, check out our Online Calendar.
To RSVP for any of these awesome activities, email us at volunteer@sdoceans.org
.

The Ocean In Motion: Marine Science Education Program

Inspiring youth with regards to marine science and conservation…one child at a time!

Ocean In Motion: Summer Snorkeling volunteers have an awesome opportunity to expose local youth to the underwater world through fun, educational outings. By getting them in the water, these volunteers are encouraging a curiosity about the waters that surround us. By incorporating marine science and conservation, OIM volunteers will be giving these children the tools necessary to make educated decisions about how to protect delicate marine life in the future!

REEFCanyon Watch Orientation/Group Hike

Want to volunteer for the Canyon Watch program, but don't know where to start? SDOF hosts monthly Canyon Watch orientation/group hikes to introduce new volunteers to the program and build camaraderie among current participants!

Los Penasquitos Canyon (East)
Sunday, June 13th
8:30AM - 10AM

For more information about volunteering for the Canyon Watch program or to RSVP, contact volunteer@sdoceans.org. If you can't make this event, but want to volunteer, check out our online 'Calendar of Events' for future group hikes, or simply review the information on our website, let us know if you have any questions and go out on your own! Doing so, will help protect fragile ecosystems and prevent the spread of pollution into our local waterways!

REEFStorm Drain Stenciling Group Event

Raising awareness about our connections to the ocean is never easier than when it’s with a group! Join us as we get together to stencil the town with our pollution prevention message - reminding people that motor oil, detergents, fertilizers, food wrappers and cigarette butts belong in trash cans and recycling centers…and not our streets! Urban runoff has proven to be the largest contributor to marine pollution worldwide…but together, we have the power to change that! Participate in SDOF’s Storm Drain Stenciling program and become part of the solution.

Clairemont Mesa
Sunday, June 13th
11AM - 1PM

For more information about volunteering for the Storm Drain Stenciling program or to RSVP, contact volunteer@sdoceans.org. Can’t make this event, but still want to volunteer? Check out our online 'Calendar of Events' for future opportunities, or simply contact volunteer@sdoceans.org and set up an appointment to check out a kit and stencil YOUR neighborhood!

REEFWhite Seabass Resstoration Project: Pen Cleaning

Loss of habitat and heavy fishing have depleted our native white seabass populations to 10% of what they were only 50 years ago…but the White Seabass Restoration Project aims to change that. Volunteering with this program gives you the chance to get out on the bay, interact with thousands of animals at one time and become directly involved in marine research and conservation (all at the same time)!

Are you a certified diver who wants to try something new and doesn’t mind getting a bit dirty? We’re always looking for dedicated volunteers who’ll help clean our white seabass pens!

San Diego Bay
Sunday, June 27th
9AM - 12PM

Since our White Seabass Restoration Project facilities consist of mesh containment nets that hang in the water for months at a time, they often become COVERED with a variety of marine life. These organisms have found the perfect place to settle and take up residency! Problem is...they block out the very vital water circulation that provides oxygen for our fish. In order to keep our juvenile white seabass strong, healthy and ready for release into the wild, we need to perform regular maintenance on their containment nets.

To dive for a cause and maybe even have some fun doing it, contact volunteer@sdoceans.org and RSVP today! * Must have logged at least 20 dives in order to participate. Proof of certification is required.

REEFWhite Seabass Restoration Project: Volunteer Orientation

Come out, enjoy the sun and learn all there is to know about replenishing a depleted fish population with SDOF’s White Seabass Restoration Project.

San Diego Bay
Sunday, June 27th
12:30PM - 1:30PM

After this short orientation, you’ll be able to volunteer as a ‘White Seabass Mentor’ and really contribute to the betterment of our oceans! Spending time out on the bay is never as rewarding as when you’re SEEING the difference you make! Contact volunteer@sdoceans.org to get involved. RSVP is required to attend!

REEFOcean In Motion: Snorkeling Trial Run

Dust off your fins, don a wetsuit and jump in for a great introduction to the season!

Mission Point
Saturday, June 12th
10:00 AM - 1:00 PM

SDOF's annual 'OIM Snorkeling Trial Run' gives both new and returning volunteers an opportunity to explore our snorkeling site without the added responsibility of supervising youth. Here, we practice setting up equipment and sizing up gear. We'll also talk about the variety of marine life found in the area and snorkel the jetty as a group to gain the experience that will help engage future participants. This is an excellent opportunity to check out the logistics of a typical snorkeling trip and we encourage all to attend!

Upcoming Snorkeling Trips

Thursday, July 8th | 12:45 PM – 4:45 PM
Thursday, June 24th | 9:45 AM – 3:15 PM

Wednesday, June 30th | 9:45 AM – 3:15 PM
Thursday, July 1st | 12:45 PM – 4:45 PM
Friday, July 2nd | 1:30 PM – 5:30 PM

Easy, Eco-Friendly Efforts

The traveling season is finally here! Check out these tips to make your summer trip as green as can be:

· If possible, travel by public bus or train. If you have to fly, book direct. Taking off and landing uses a tremendous amount of fuel! · When choosing your destination, consider one of the many ecotourism hotspots around the world.

· Book green hotels and hybrid rental cars from agencies like Hertz, Enterprise and Avis.

· Many cruise lines have highly negative impacts on our oceans by dumping oil and sewage. Click here for more conscientious cruise companies that offer just as much fun as the rest.

· Don’t forget the good habits you have at home! Pack a reusable water bottle and a compact shopping bag.

· Use travel search engines like Orbitz , Travelocity and STA Travel which have “green travel” sections that will help you plan your eco-friendly trip.

· Finally, consider this fact: Flushing the toilet on the plane uses as much fuel as running a car six miles! Try to use the restroom at the airport instead.

Your summer vacation doesn’t have to negatively affect our environment! Choose an eco-friendly option, expand your cultural awareness and appreciate for the planet without harming it at the same time!

Spring Cleaning: Get your home in order without using harmful chemicals!

The average American home has 63 synthetic chemical cleaning products in its cupboards (translating to roughly 10 gallons of chemicals)! These chemicals can be detrimental to your health as well as the environment. This month, try it the natural way! Just go to the store and look for products that are non-toxic, biodegradable and made from renewable resources. Brands like Seventh Generation, Clorox Green Works and Simple Green are great choices! For an even greener (and more budget-friendly) choice, make your own cleaning kit with stuff you already have at home. Vinegar, baking soda and a few drops of your favorite scented oils work just as well as the hard stuff. Plus, by using reusable spray bottles, you’ll prevent all the packaging from store-bought products from entering our landfills.

Clean green with these easy-to-follow steps:
All-purpose cleaner:
Mix a little warm water with either vinegar or baking soda.
Window cleaner:
Fill a spray bottle with water and either ¼ cup white vinegar or 1-tbsp of lemon juice.
Carpet odors:
Sprinkle a little baking soda and vacuum it up.
Oven grease:
Cover the bottom of the oven with water and baking soda and let set overnight.
Mold removal:
Combine 2 tsp of tea tree oil with 2 cups of water. Shake and spray on problem areas.

When replacing the products you already have, don’t just throw them in the trash, as they may end up contaminating our water supply. Instead, take them direclty to your local dump, like the Miramar Landfill.
