SDOF Programs

Disney’s ‘Give a Day, Get a Day’ Promotion a Success!

We at the San Diego Oceans Foundation would like to thank all of our newly-found volunteers for their valuable support and help in promoting healthy oceans! The overwhelming response received through Disney's 'Give A Day, Get A Day' promotion has enabled SDOF to conduct 653 hikes to prevent sewer spills from contaminating our waters and stencil a whopping 1,606 storm drains to raise awareness about our connections to the ocean. With such great interest, Disney was able to reach their goal of inspiring one million people to volunteer a day of service in only 2½ months! The innovative nature of this promotion exponentially increased SDOF's capacity to excite people about taking an active role in protecting our oceans. Many volunteers served for the first time, beginning what we hope will be a life-long service journey. We look forward to carrying on the momentum that this program created and accomplishing even more through our marine science education, pollution prevention and restoration programs throughout the rest of the year!

SDOF volunteers and members are the backbone of our organization and make achieving our goals possible. Once again, thank you for your valuable support!

Mary Gill: From Disney to Devoted

SDOF would like to take a moment to honor Mary Gill, a new Canyon Watch volunteer, for her invaluable support and desire to help safeguard our oceans. Mary learned about our organization and volunteering opportunities through Disney's 'Give a Day, Get a Day' promotion. Having completed over a dozen Canyon Watch hikes in only three months time (well exceeding her requirement for a Disneyland voucher), Mary has definitely earned the title of 'ocean steward'. Her adoption of Navajo Canyon and repeated field reports provide valuable information necessary to prevent sewer spills from contaminating our local waters. Thank you Mary, for serving as our eyes and ears in your community and for doing your part to ensure a healthy marine environment!

"I grew up living on Navajo Canyon, exploring it with my siblings. We made believe that we were everyone from Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone, to Captain Kirk and Mr. Spock down there. My children and their friends also grew up on the canyon, setting out on their own adventures within it. By participating in the Canyon Watch program, I have the chance to do a small part in making sure the canyons (and ocean water downstream) stay healthy and clean. By walking Navajo Canyon frequently with my dog Belle, to check the sewer system and pick up trash, I know that our open spaces will be available for future generations of children to explore and enjoy as well!”

As a 'thank you' for all of her hard work and dedication, we would like to present Mary Gill with a family 4-pack of tickets to the wonderful SEA LIFE Aquarium in Carlsbad, where she can view life she is helping to protect!

White Seabass Restoration Project

Due to some unforeseen obstacles and a redirection of fish, we will not be receiving our next batch of juvenile white seabass in April. We do, however, promise to keep those who have expressed interest in the program informed as to the delivery date once it is set in stone. Thank you for your patience!

If you'd like to get involved with us before this program re-starts, please check out our online 'Calendar of Events' to see what we've got going on this month.

The Ocean In Motion: Marine Science Education Program

Would you like your child(ren) to learn about all of the amazing things our waters have to offer? SDOF's mobile marine science program brings interactive lectures, hands-on activities and live animal labs to San Diego County schools and afterschool programs all year long! If you know of a classroom (or group of students) who would benefit from a little marine science and conservation, let us know! We've got three topics to choose from, serve all grade levels (K-12), and would love to have our experienced educators come in and help inspire your students!

For more information or to book one of our educational programs, contact cheryl@sdoceans.org. We've only got a few months left before classes end and summer snorkeling begins!

REEFCanyon Watch

Want to volunteer for the Canyon Watch program, but don't know where to start? SDOF hosts monthly Canyon Watch Orientation/Group Hikes to introduce new volunteers to the program and build camaraderie among current participants!

Swan Canyon
Sunday, April 11th
8:30AM - 10AM

If you cannot make this event, but would still like to volunteer, please check out our online 'Calendar of Events' for future group hikes, or simply review the information on our website, let us know if you have any questions about volunteer responsibilities and go out on your own! Doing so, will help protect fragile ecosystems and prevent the spread of pollution into our local waterways...and eventually the ocean!

REEFStorm Drain Stenciling

Raising awareness about our connection to the ocean is never easier than when it's with a group! Join us as we get together to stencil an entire area with our pollution prevention message - reminding people that motor oil, detergents, fertilizers, food wrappers and cigarette butts belong in trash cans and recycling centers...and not our streets! Urban runoff has proven to be the largest contributor to marine pollution worldwide...but together, we have the power to change that! Participate in SDOF's Storm Drain Stenciling program and become part of the solution.

Downtown San Diego (B & Park)
Sunday, April 11th
11AM - 1PM

If you cannot make this event, but would still like to volunteer, please check out our online 'Calendar of Events' for future group stenciling days, or simply contact volunteer@sdoceans.org to set up an appointment so you can check out a kit and stencil YOUR neighborhood!

REEFCreek to Bay

Calling all volunteers! The San Diego Oceans Foundation is participating in I Love a Clean San Diego's annual 'Creek to Bay' event for the first time ever...and we need all the help we can get!

Juniper Canyon
Saturday, April 24th
9:00 AM - 12 PM

Join us as we hike through one of San Diego's many urban canyons to prevent discarded trash and other harmful contaminants from reaching our beaches and bays. This effort will be a combination of SDOF's Canyon Watch program and a good old fashioned cleanup, which means we'll be looking for possible sewer spills while picking up trash and enjoying nature all at the same time!

To be part of the solution, RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org today! Not only will you be helping to protect sensitive ecosystems, but you'll get to meet other, like-minded people and we'll even send you home with a sustainable parting gift - just in time for Earth Day!

REEFReef Monitoring Project

Attention all snorkelers and SCUBA divers...Want to get out and make your dive count for something? Join SDOF's quarterly Reef Monitoring Adventure Days and make a difference by completing underwater surveys! By participating, volunteer divers/snorkelers identify marine species, document biodiversity, record population trends and become 'Citizen Scientists'...all in their own backyard! This is a perfect opportunity to get started with our Reef Monitoring Program, put your new identification abilities to the test, fine-tune your underwater survey skills or just get out and enjoy diving/snorkeling with like-minded people! We'll have survey kits available for purchase and some of our OIM specimens and images from local photographers to share with the group.

Reef Monitoring Adventure Day
La Jolla Cove
Sunday, April 25th
8AM - 11AM

To get in the water and actively participate in marine conservation, contact volunteer@sdoceans.org today! YOUR survey could actually help protect the ocean you love!

Specimens for our Ocean In Motion Marine Science Education Program

As we kick off our school program again this year, we’ll be looking for even more ways to get local students excited about marine science! If you happen to have any sort of specimens (e.g. shark skin & egg casings, crustacean molts, preserved fish/invertebrates, baleen, bones), we’d love to incorporate them into our program.

Easy, Eco-Friendly Efforts
Your monthly guide
to sustainable living!

Nearly 75% of the world's fisheries
are fished to capacity, or overfished.
Our seafood choices have the power
to make this situation worse,
or improve it. The San Diego
Oceans Foundation has partnered with
the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s Seafood Watch
program to help consumers and businesses make choices for healthy oceans. Seafood Watch recommendations indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives,"
and which ones you should "Avoid" in terms of
sustainability. Seafood Watch raises consumer
awareness through easy-to-use pocket guides,
mobile applications
and a variety of outreach efforts. All recommendations are science-based,
peer reviewed, and use ecosystem-based criteria to ensure that the most accurate and
up-to-date information is being utilized
(and so you can be sure you are effectively doing your part).

For more information about how the
Monterey Bay Aquarium develops
their recommendations, please see:
