DNA Forensics in Marine Ecology
Just as DNA forensics is used to unravel events that occur at crime scenes in the absence of witnesses, it provide us with important clues about things we cannot observe in the world's oceans. Dispersal of microscopic larvae, predation in the deep sea and illegal whaling activities on the high seas are all difficult to observe directly...but DNA sequences can be used to infer patterns of dispersal and identify tiny bits of tissue ranging from the contents of a predators stomach to the fillets at a fish market.
Come, find out how these molecular approaches are applied to ecological studies and marine conservation biology - It's CSI: Pacific!
To join us for this interesting lecture, please RSVP to cheryl@sdoceans.org today!

Canyon Watch Program
We've got classic San Diego weather and it's a perfect time to get outside! Come out and spend the morning with fellow 'Canyon Watchers' on our next group hike:
Lake Murray
Saturday, August 29th
8:30AM – 10AM
We'll be preventing the spread of pollution by walking this beautiful canyon (stopping every so often to inspect a manhole or pick up a bit of trash). This hike will be a great introduction to the program (or refresher) for anyone who wants it!
If you cannot make this hike, but still want to volunteer - please visit our 'Canyon Watch' tab for guides from canyons all over San Diego! Volunteers who go out on their own to monitor on a regular basis are those who make up the very backbone of this program!
E-mail volunteer@sdoceans.org to RSVP!
Reef Monitoring Project
Free REEF Identification Classes
Summer is here and when better to learn about what we’ve got in our waters? SDOF’s Reef Monitoring Project offers free identification training courses every month to do just that! Check out the marine diversity that the tourists travel from miles around to see and learn how YOU can help protect it!
Invertebrate/Algae Identification
Ocean Enterprises (7710 Balboa Ave | San Diego, CA 92121)
Saturday, August 22nd
9:30AM – 12:30PM
Once you’ve taken our class and become a ‘invert expert’, you can go out and complete surveys that help fisheries management and governmental agencies keep our oceans healthy. Just imagine YOUR survey helping to protect the ocean you love!
To RSVP, please contact volunteer@sdoceans.org. Space is limited!
Storm Drain Stenciling
Raising awareness about our connection to the ocean has never been easier than when it’s with a group! Join us as we get together to stencil an entire neighborhood with our pollution prevention message, reminding people that motor oil, detergents, fertilizers, food wrappers and cigarette butts belong in the trash cans and recycling centers…and not our streets!
Lemon Grove (email for additional details)
Saturday, August 29th
12PM – 2PM
Urban runoff has proven to be the largest contributor to marine pollution worldwide…but we have the power to change that!
For more information and to get involved email volunteer@sdoceans.org
California Coastal Cleanup Day - Save the Date!
California Coastal Cleanup Day is the premier volunteer event focused on marine conservation in the country! In 2008, more than 7,000 volunteers worked together to collect 100,000+ pounds of trash and recyclables from our ocean, beaches and bays!!! Help make this year even better by joining SDOF in our annual underwater cleanup!
San Diego Bay
Saturday, September 19th
9AM – 12PM
· Divers must RSVP in advance and have at least 20 logged dives in order to participate. Please contact volunteer@sdoceans.org for more information.
If you are a Dive Master (with insurance) and would like to volunteer a few hours of your time to ensure the safety of others, please let us know. We can't get out there without one!
· For you non-divers, we need your help collecting trash at the surface!
