Executive Director's Message: 2008 Year in Review

As the year concludes, we are grateful for what we have been able to accomplish with your help, and only with your continued support will we be able to persist advocating our message of ocean stewardship.

Since our humble beginnings in 1984, we have grown to 3 staff members, a board of 12, close to 200 members, over 700 active volunteers and over 5,000 people interested in hearing about us. It has been an exciting time in our history and we are grateful to you, for without you, we could not have accomplished so much good in our community.

This year, as members, volunteers and sponsors, you have enabled us to:

- Reach over 1300 San Diego school children through our Ocean in Motion: Marine Science Education Program
- Including bringing close to 200 onto Floating Marine Labs
- Stencil over 300 Storm Drains across San Diego neighborhoods
- Raise and release over 100,000 White Seabass to date
- Remove close to 500lbs of trash from San Diego Bay
- Present monthly SeaSeries Seminars to over 200 people
- Conduct hundreds of REEF monitoring surveys
- Protect San Diego Canyons, with over 200 Canyon Watch hikes

Only with your continued support can we grow our programs and reach more underserved children, increase our marine life restocking and monitoring impact, as well as to continue preventing sewage spills and runoff pollution. By becoming a member, you not only gain your year-end, tax-deductible contribution, you also grow our SDOF family, as an additional ocean steward. We wish to thank you, each of you who have selflessly given of yourself, your finances, your services or your things, each contribution helps us to continue to grow and help our marine environment.

Happy Holidays!

SDOF Programs

White Seabass Restocking Project Update

San Diego Bay fish pens have been prepared for our newest school of fish, including extensive cleaning, removing marine predator net and installed an upgraded design for birds, including repairs on the oil boom to prevent pollutants from harming our fish.

Volunteer Opportunities

For more information about the programs below, check out the December Calendar. To RSVP for any of these activities, email us at volunteer@sdoceans.org

Storm Drain Stenciling

stormdrain

This year we were very successful in stenciling hundreds of storm drains throughout San Diego County.

In partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego, SDOF volunteers stencil messages next to storm drains to help raise awareness about the link between the storm drain systems and water quality.

If you would like to gather a group together to stencil storm drains in your neighborhood, please contact us at volunteer@sdoceans.org and set up a time to pick up a kit at the SDOF office!

Canyon Watch

Tecolote Canyon
Saturday, December 13th
9:00AM to 10:30AM

Come, join us as we end 2008 with a morning hike of Upper Tecolote Canyon. This is our last event of the year and we are looking for as many people as we can to trek around and help us prevent pollution at its source!

What is better than shedding a few of those left-over Turkey Day calories in preparation for the sweets ahead? RSVP to cheryl@sdoceans.org today!
