SDOF Staff Changes

Courtney is Leaving SDOF

CB.jpg Soon I will be moving with my fiancé, Bret, to Las Vegas and ending my time at the San Diego Oceans Foundation. I feel truly blessed to have been a part of SDOF’s wonderful programs and to have met and worked with so many amazing volunteers. Many of you have touched my life with your generosity, enthusiasm and passion to make our oceans vibrant and healthy once again. I will treasure the experiences I’ve had over the past two years and the work we’ve done together. The new SDOF staff is going to take our programs to new heights and continue the work we’ve been doing since 1984, but only with YOUR continued support! I look forward to seeing all of you at the 2008 Oceans Benefit in September

Very truly,

Courtney Gosch

P.S. Yes, I know there is no ocean in Las Vegas, but Mandalay Bay has a very realistic beach! If you would like to stay in touch, please contact me at my SDOF email and it will be passed along to me!

Ocean Stewardship

Sustainable Seafood Choices

annika.jpgWhat words come to mind when you think of seafood?  You may think ‘yumm!’  Most people do!  Unfortunately, the number of people in the world is dramatically rising, while fish stocks continue to decline!

Over the past few months, SDOF intern, Annika Kubischta, developed "Sustainable Seafood Choices," to spread awareness of the issues facing the oceans as a direct result of fishing practices and pressures.  Click here for more information

Ocean In Motion Snorkeling Day Camps

For only $25, your child could participate in our exciting Ocean In Motion Snorkeling Camp!  We provide a hands on experience with snorkeling and marine science.  While snorkeling, your child will observe fish, invertebrates and algae.  On land, participants will learn about marine animals and ways they can help become good ocean stewards!  For more information, please visit this link.

Can Volunteering Make a Fisherman Lucky?

Jerry Poehlman, a White Seabass Restocking Project volunteer has some exciting news!  After volunteering for just a couple of months with SDOF, he has finally caught his first legal size white seabass!  Do you think it is a coincidence or just pure luck?  Click here to read his amazing story.

Mission Bay White Seabass Release

Join us this Wednesday June 11th at either 5pm or 6pm at the Mission Bay pen to help us release the 6,000 white seabass we have been taking care of for the past months.  We will be rolling up our sleeves, scooping the fish out of the pen and hand releasing them into the Bay.  Make sure to wear clothes that you don't mind getting dirty.  Come see these graduates leave our pens and venture out into the ocean!  We have two shifts that need to be filled: 5-6pm & 6-7pm.

Please RSVP for one of those shifts at volunteer@sdoceans.org

Storm Drain Stenciling

Saturday June 28th - 10am - Noon | Meet at SDOF Office
Saturday July 26th - 9am -11am | Meet at SDOF Office

In partnership with I Love a Clean San Diego, SDOF volunteers stencil messages next to storm drains to help raise awareness about the link between the storm drain systems and water quality. Many areas of the County have not been stenciled or need to be re-stenciled. Paint, stencils, and safety equipment are provided at no charge. A brief 10-minute orientation will be provided.  Please RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org.

White Seabass Orientations

Tuesday June 10th | 5:30pm – 6:30pm | San Diego Bay

Monday June 16th | Noon – 1:00pm | San Diego Bay

Thursday June 26th | 5:30pm – 6:30pm | San Diego Bay

Since we are releasing the white seabass in our Mission Bay pen on June 11th, we will not be accepting new volunteers for Mission Bay at this time.  We will, however, be holding orientations for the San Diego Bay pens.  If you do not foresee an orientation you can attend in the next month, we may be able to schedule an orientation to fit your schedule. Get Involved in Canyon Watch

Rose Canyon Intro Hike

9:00am - 10:45am

Saturday June 14th

Do you want to volunteer for the Canyon Watch program, but don’t know where to start? SDOF now hosts monthly Canyon Watch hikes to introduce new volunteers to the program and build camaraderie among current volunteers! On the hike we will explain how the program works, what to look for and even a bit about the flora and fauna that lives in our canyons. With more than 300 miles of sewer lines in our urban canyons, when there is a sewer line failure the spill can go undetected for days leaving a grim impact on our rivers, bays, and beaches… become a Canyon Watch volunteer to protect these fragile ecosystems!  For more information about the Canyon Watch program click here

RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org for directions and more details!

San Diego Bay Pen Cleaning

We need snorkelers and divers to help us clean the San Diego Bay white seabass pens on Saturday June 21st at 8:30am.  If you are interested in helping us, please RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org and we will give you all the details!

Join SDOF or renew your membership using our online secured site!
