DeepSea Power &
Light has been designing and building deep ocean lights, cameras, through
hull boating lights, and battery power systems in San Diego for 25
years. Their quality products are known and used around the world by
marine researchers, ocean resource companies, law enforcement, naval
defense agencies, and private boat owners. Guests will receive a brief
presentation of some of the applications of DeepSea’s products, then tour
the plant, experiencing operational examples of DeepSea’s newest lights and
camerasm including lights similar to ones used by Hollywood Director James
Cameron to illuminate the wreck of the RMS Titanic for the movie.
Guests will have the opportunity to personalize a
Styrofoam cup with markers, and then send it to an equivalent pressure of
the Mariana Trench, 36,000-ft (11km). You’ll
be amazed at the affects of ocean pressure!

Canyon Watchers
Help City Reduce Sewage Spills by 80% in 8 Years
On April 18th, in recognition of Earth Day, Council
President Peters and representatives from the San Diego Oceans Foundation,
I Love a Clean San Diego, the Friends of Los Peñasquitos Canyon and the
City’s Metropolitan Wastewater Department gathered to thank the community
volunteers who help prevent sewer spills from fouling our watershed and
coastal waters.
Councilmember Peters stated, “The
City is proud to partner with the San Diego Oceans Foundation in organizing
the Canyon Watchers Program. Last year, there were more than 200
volunteer hikers in the city's 10 canyons looking for damaged manhole
covers and sewage spills, donating more than 740 hours of community
service, to help protect our watershed and public waters. As a result of all of these
efforts, by 2007, we had reduced sewer spills and beach closure days by
80%, and our beaches now consistently earn "A" grades for water
quality in the annual survey from Heal the Bay. I want to thank these
volunteers for the hundreds of hours of invaluable service in the cause of
protecting our canyon environment.”
A big “thank you” goes out to all of those volunteers
that participate in our Canyon Watch program!
Ocean In Motion ~
Summer Snorkeling
Welcome Cheryl!
Hi SDOF Supporters! I’m Cheryl Barnes, the new SDOF OIM Coordinator!
My inquisitive and conservationist
nature helped to ignite my passion for the ocean in
high school while taking my first marine biology class. From
that point, I decided to major in the discipline and graduated
from SDSU with a Bachelor's in Biology (Emphasis: Marine
Biology).
While in college, I took just about every
marine biology/ecology class they had to offer (no matter how many
hours of lab it required). Through these courses, I began to
realize that fieldwork was what excited me most. I believe
that learning about marine organisms in their natural environment teaches
us much more than in traditional classroom settings.
I am often so enthusiastic about it that I can
hardly contain myself when at the beach with
friends and family. The teacher in me always ends up
pointing out some alga or invertebrate species and explaining its
ecological significance or why it has certain
characteristics.
I guess that's what led me to the Ocean In Motion
position with SDOF. I get to talk to kids about all our
oceans' fascinating inhabitants (not to mention all the great
snorkeling) and working with you… our volunteers!
Happy fishes!
Cheryl Barnes

We will provide FREE pizza and drinks for everyone who comes!
At this orientation we will
present:

snorkeling trip works and what is required of volunteers.
* 2008 Snorkeling Schedule- You will receive a trip schedule
for June-August 2008.
* Animal Information- A brief introduction to animals seen
on snorkeling trips, handling procedures, basic information and fun facts
you can share with the kids.
* Safety & Interaction: Brief safety instruction and tips
on appropriate interaction between adults and children.
* Q&A: We'll answer any additional
questions you may have!

White
Seabass Pen Cleaning
Sunday, May 18th | 12:00-2:00 pm
San Diego Bay White Seabass
Pens
Are you a SCUBA diver OR snorkeler? Then we need YOUR
HELP to help pick, pry and rip mussels and other sea-life off of the
containment nets at our
white seabass pens so that the fish will always have a constant flow of
fresh water! Show up with all of your gear, ready to get in the water and
get up close and personal with the stuff that grows! A hood and an old pair
of gardening/work gloves are also highly recommended (your bare hands have
no chance against razor sharp mussels). Plan on spending 1 hour in the water
(you'll be tired!), then muffins, water and juice will be provided after
the dive. 12,000 White Seabass will be very thankful for your help!
White
Seabass Volunteer Orientations
Want to be outside on San Diego Bay
and help restock the ocean at the same time? Then volunteer for the White
Seabass Restocking Project... it's fun, and flexible according to your
schedule. Learn more about the project on our website, then sign up for a
one hour orientation to get you started!

Monitoring Project
Join our class and learn about all of the interesting
critters living beneath the waves before the summer diving season starts!
Instead of saying "What was THAT THING?," you'll be able to give
it a name, and even know a little bit of biology! Plus you'll be
contributing to knowledge that will help ensure our marine environment
continues to be a vibrant community of life.
