Farewell Noelle
Eight Great Years ~ A Sad Goodbye!
![]() |
With the recent addition of our little boy, Oliver - our family has decided to make some changes in our lives.
My husband has accepted a new job in Germany and we depart for Europe in four weeks! Leaving all of our friends and family behind will be very difficult ...
as many of the SDOF volunteers have become very dear friends of ours. However, the move abroad will be life-changing and we are thrilled for the new adventure and
opportunity that awaits! |
You can continue to stay in contact with me through my company's website: www.products4causes.com
Best fishes,
Noelle Morris

SeaSeries
Continuing Education for Ocean Lovers
On the fourth Wednesday of each month SDOF hosts a FREE continuing education event called "Sea Series" for volunteers, members and anyone interested in learning about the marine environment.
Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) In San Diego
Dr. Ed Parnell, Scripps Institution of Oceanography
Wed, March 26th | 6:30 - 8:00 pm
Sumner Auditorium, Scripps Institute of Oceanography
RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org
The California Marine Life Protection Act is now being implemented in California. Come hear what its about, why its important, and HOW and WHY you should get involved. There is much mis-information circulating among various stakeholder groups about limiting access and closing extensive sections of shoreline. This can only be addressed through stakeholder and grass roots public outreach efforts. Ed Parnell will talk about these topics and about his research on applying habitat and species information for designing reserves off San Diego.
Ed grew up in the San Diego area and developed his deep love of the ocean early in life, which eventually blossomed into a career as a marine ecologist. Ed is actively collaborating with many researchers and stakeholders to determine the effects of humans on coastal ecosystems and ways to minimize such disturbances. Ed is also on the advisory board of the San Diego Oceans Foundation.

It was a great day for 22 students from Monarch High School, a San Diego school whose mission it is to provide these homeless and at-risk kids with a quality education. Thanks to a grant to the San Diego Oceans Foundation from the Port of San Diego, these students, and many more are able to experience a "floating classroom" in San Diego Bay. Continue on to read about one recent adventure! |

It was a warm sunny day in March when a group of young biologists in training came aboard the Ocean Odyssey and set out on their voyage to San Diego Bay.
All hands took part in reeling in the net to bring up some of the Bay’s little known residents for a closer look. Sometimes extra close! Shantel could even tell you
what stingray teeth feel like, and if you want to know how slimy a Navanax is, just ask Maria! In fact, no hand remained dry as the group inspected sponges, sea stars,
shrimp, crabs, a lizard fish, mussels, sea snails, halibut and a barred sand bass. They even got to see the beautiful bioluminescent belly of a midshipman fish,
and learned his song! |

They then moved on to oceanography and used scientific instruments to measure the currents, water quality, and collect a sample of plankton.
A drop of water on the head before looking at it under the microscope ensured that no one will forget how many tiny wiggly creatures can live in a single drop of sea
water! How incredible it is to be able to give these deserving children an amazing and educational oceanic experience! |

SDOF needs your help at the Fred Hall Show in Del Mar - San Diego's largest Fishing & Tackle Event! This year, United Anglers and SDOF will be sharing a booth to attract even more people to the White Seabass Restocking Project. Volunteers will help distribute White Seabass Derby fliers, sell White Seabass t-shirts, and be there to promote our White Seabass Restocking Project. This is a fun way to meet anglers, boaters, and others who love the water while spreading the message of ocean stewardship! No experience necessary! |

Announcement: A new lock has been installed on the volunteer shed at the Mission Bay pen. The combination is the same as the lock for the gate key. A new and improved bird net was installed on the pen in February. This new system is much easier to use and provides better coverage to protect the fish. We want to constantly improve the pens to make them easier for the volunteers and better for the fish, your feedback is appreciated very much! |
