Sea Series

Continuing Education for Ocean Lovers

Each month SDOF hosts a FREE continuing education event called "Sea Series" for volunteers, members and anyone interested in learning about the marine environment.

Searching for Underwater Evidence of Ancient Coastal Human Travel
Dr. Eleanora (Norrie) Robbins, SDSU Geological Sciences Dept
Wed, Nov 28th | 6:45 - 8:00 pm | Ocean Enterprises, 7710 Balboa Ave 92111
RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org

It is believed that civilizations living 40,000 years ago traveled along the Southern California coastline. Dr. Robbins uses geological analysis of sea level changes to determine where these humans lived. SCUBA divers from her team search for artificts from these early settlements, some of which may in be La Jolla and Scripps Canyon. Don't miss this exciting opportunity to learn about the cultural and natural history of San Diego.

Volunteer Spotlight

Recognizing Volunteers Who Go Above and Beyond

Travis Pugh - Canyon Watch
Travis has spent over 350 hours hiking Chollas Creek since January 2007, checking on the manholes and sewer lines along the way. This canyon is particularly important as there is running water, which could spread a sewer spill rapidly. Travis also started bringing a trash bag along with him and picking up trash along the way, making sure Chollas Creek stays pristine.
He says, "It is a great way to start the day feeling like you have already done something good." Travis enjoys seeing the resident geese on his morning hikes; "they have a lot of personality and they seem to recognize me." Great Job!

Tom Candaux - White Seabass Restocking Project
Tom has been volunteering with SDOF for about 6 months at the San Diego Bay White Seabass pens. In addition to the normal volunteer responsibilties, Tom also helps deliver the fish food and is involved with rebuilding the Mission Bay pen.

He says, "It’s great being out of doors at the waterfront feeding the white seabass. As a fisherman it’s always fun watching the fish come up to the surface and take the food, and I love feeling that I’m contributing to the recovery of a important species that’s native to California."
