SDOF Sea Series

Atomic Shipwrecks of Bikini Atoll
Eric Hanauer, Diver, Photographer and Writer
Wed, Aug 22 | 6:45-8 pm | Ocean Enterprises, 7710 Balboa Ave 92111
RSVP to volunteer@sdoceans.org

Each month SDOF hosts a FREE continuing education event called "Sea Series" for volunteers, members and anyone interested in learning about the marine environment. For dedicated wreck divers, Bikini is Nirvana! When diving the atomic shipwrecks, divers can literally touch the face of history. Being aware of that history is essential for getting the most out of the experience. Eric will take us on a journey through history of atomic testing in the Bikini Atoll using photographs and first hand experiences of diving some of the 23 renowned wrecks off of Bikini ( the Saratoga, a 880 ft American aircraft carrier, the Nagato, a 708 ft Japanese battleship, and the submarine, Apogon). This is a presentation not to be missed!

Perpetual Roger Revelle Awarded to Sandy Purdon

H.P. "Sandy" Purdon, an avid boater and marine partner, has been a significant presence on the San Diego boating landscape since the 1980s. He helped to bring the America's Cup back to the US in 1987. He sailed solo from San Diego to Honolulu. He founded the California Clean Marinas Program.

Now, he is the 19th recipient of SDOF's Perpetual Roger Revelle Award, which is awarded annually to a San Diegan in science, academia, industry, military, recreation or philanthropy who demonstrates personal initiative in encouraging stewardship of the world's precious ocean resources.

Sandy is living proof that someone can turn his passion into his livelihood, and use a marine business as a mechanism to make a difference in the world! Congratulations Sandy!

Program Updates

Ocean in Motion marine science education program

The Ocean in Motion has had a very successful summer! We're reaching more youth than ever before, thanks to the continued support of our membership base (thank you!).

Last week we journeyed to Santee with our mobile marine unit and taught over 480 youth about invertebrate adapatations! The squeals from the kids could be heard miles away as they became "marine scientists" and handled several tidepool animals.

Additionally, we've had the opportunity to lead a dozen snorkeling trips for underserved youth! These kids don't often have opportunities to visit San Diego's beaches. So, we introduce them to snorkeling and provide a marine biology overview to help them realize how delicate our oceans and its inhabitants are!

Ocean in Motion ~ Snorkeling Trips

Monday, Aug 13 | 12:00-3:30 | Mission Point
Thursday, Aug 16 | 12:00-3:30 | Mission Point
Tuesday, Aug 21 | 11:00-2:30 | Mission Point
Saturday, Aug 25 | 12:00-3:30 | Mission Point
Thursday, Aug 30 | 11:00- 2:30 | Mission Point

The Ocean In Motion is SDOF's marine science education program for inner city youth! During the summer we take 10-12 middle school or high school kids per trip snorkeling in Mission Bay and give them a HANDS ON experience with marine life. This is a very special outing for the kids, as many of them have never been swimming in the ocean, even though they have grown up in San Diego county! When you participate in the Ocean In Motion you'll be making a difference in the lives of these kids and have fun at the same time.

REEF Fish ID Training Class

Tuesday, Aug 21 | 5:30 - 9:30 pm
Ocean Enterprises (7710 Balboa Ave, Suite 101, San Diego 92111)
Join us for a Fish Identification class on Tuesday, August 21st (it's free)! Whether you're a fish ID expert or a "newbie diver", this class will leave you full of knowledge about our underwater world, which you can then put to good use. Instead of saying "What was THAT fish," you'll be able to give it a name, and even know a little bit of biology!

You'll also learn how you can volunteer by conducting an underwater REEF survey and collecting valuable data on local populations on future dives. By becoming an SDOF "Reefer," you'll receive special notices about free boat dives, continuing education speakers and tours and much more! Plus you'll be contributing to knowledge that will help ensure our marine environment continues to be a vibrant community of life.

White Seabass Orientations

Wednesdays in August
August 15 | 6:00-7:00 pm
August 22 | 12:00-1:00 pm
Want to be outside on San Diego Bay and help restock the ocean at the same time? Then volunteer for the White Seabass Restocking Project... it's fun, and flexible according to your schedule. Learn more about the project on our website, then sign up for a one hour orientation to get you started!

White Seabass Net Cleaning - SCUBA Diving

Saturday, Aug 18 | 8:00 - 11:00 am
The downtown WSB pen is covered with growth! We need about 20 snorkelers and SCUBA divers to help us pick, pry and rip the sea life off of the nets to ensure our fish have lots of fresh water flow and oxygen. Just last week LARGE, wild, fish were spotted feeding in between the predator and containment nets (we think, lingcod, mackerel, seabass, and kelpfish)... you'll get to see them up close and personal. Plus, what a great way to EARN MINUTES for the Dive-A-Thon while doing good!

Wetsuit Rack Needed!

Carpenter Available?
We're looking for a volunteer that is handy with tools who can build a portable wetsuit rack. This rack needs to be sturdy, large enough to hold 25 wetsuits, and constructed with wheels so we can transport the rack between the two SDOF offices.
